Partnering the 5G RuralFirst project
The 5G RuralFirst project, based on trials on Orkney Islands, has received a £4.3m grant, led by Cisco and lead partner University of Strathclyde. The project will deliver testbeds and trials to exploit 5G benefits for rural communities and industries.
Shefa is an active partner and will provide connectivity from Datavita, Glasgow to our PoP in Orkney, but also offering co-location and mast space services using our landing station facilities at Ayre of Cara.
The project aims to integrate spectrum sharing strategies for 5G; bringing connectivity to rural communities, enabling smart farming; innovative methods of delivering broadcast radio over 5G working with the BBC, alongside the delivery of 5G connectivity for IoT in utility and other industries in rural areas. Also local business Cloudnet It Solutions and Orkney Islands Council are involved in the project.
